ULEB Cup Draw profile: Telindus Oostende
|
Telindus Oostende has the responsability to represent Belgian basketball in the ULEB Cup elimination rounds as the only surviving team from this country. Oostende has overcome a very tough regular season group and even had to win a replay game to reach the next round as one of the bottom-ranked second-ranked teams in the competition. The Belgian League champion opened the competition with a 84-77 road loss against Panellinios despite 16 points from Titus Ivory, but Oostende soon found its rhythm. Oostende sent a message that echoed all around the competition by topping mighty Dynamo Moscow 89-83 in one of the biggest wins for Belgian basketball in recent years. Jerry Green paced the winners with 19 points, Chris McCray 18 while Elvir Ovcina had 12, 11 rebounds and 10 assists to register the third-ever triple double in ULEB Cup history. Oostende kept its momentum going with a 76-89 road win against Beghelli Bologna behind 19 points from Veselin Petrovic. Oostende went down to register consecutive losses, 81-75 in Nymburk and 72-73 against Red Star amid controversy. Oostende bounced back from those losses with a 83-71 home win against Panellinios behind 18 points from Sam Van Rossom, but a 104-84 road loss against Dynamo saw the team drop to 3-4. It was do-or-die time for Oostende and the team delivered with a 83-81 home win against Nymburk. Greg Brunner paced the winners with 20 points off the bench. The replay game against Beghelli Bologna turned into a do-or-die showdown for both teams and Oostende survived with a 81-73 home win with Chuck Davis leading 6 players in double digits with 15 points. Van Rossom had 25 points while Davis added 18 in an impressing 86-100 road triumph against Red Star that allowed Oostende to finish second in Group F. The fact that as many as 7 players led the team in scoring in different games so far this season says enough about Oostende, a hungry team in which danger can some from any player, anywhere. POST-DRAW REACTIONS | Telindus Oostende head coach Sharon Drucker :"I think Kyiv is a big team with a big budget and they also have the home advantage. However, we are a unique team and have to believe in ourselves. We will now prepare ourselves and be ready for the two games." |
