British League, Regular Season, Games 21-22: February 20-24, 2008
Tony Dorsey - Guildford Heat The top three teams in the British Basketball League were all perfect in a busy weekend to keep the status quo at the top of the standings. The league-leading Newcastle Eagles picked up a pair of wins over the Everton Tigers and PAWS London Capital to improve to 18-3, while second place Kularoos Plymouth Raiders served up a trio of wins to get to 17-7 and the defending champion Guildford Heat stretched their win streak to five by topping Jelson Homes DMU Leicester Riders and SAMG Verve Scottish Rocks and improve their record to 16-5. The Eagles soared thanks to a balanced scoring effort. On Friday, veteran Fab Flournoy scored 22 and Lynard Stewart added 18 in a 97-85 won over Everton and the next day in London Stewart shined with 25 and Darius Defoe added 17 in a 73-80 road win. The Raiders got balanced scoring in each of their weekend games, led by Andrew Lasker, who averaged 17.3 points as the team beat the SAMG Verve Scottish Rocks 83-79 on Wednesday, Team Birmingham Panthers 83-92 on Saturday and the BiG Storage Cheshire Jets 84-93 on Sunday. Meanwhile the Heat overran the Jelson Homes DMU Leicester Riders 110-97 behind three scorers reaching the 20-point mark: Tony Dorsey scored with 26 points and grabbed 12 rebounds, Mike Martin added 23 points, and E.J. Harrison had 20. The Heat dominated early and led 60-34 by halftime before coasting through the second half. On Sunday, the defending champs traveled north to beat the Rocks, 72-84, as Martin and James Jones scored 21 apiece, while Dan Gilbert added 14. Rob Yanders paced the Rocks with 22 points in defeat. The other big winner of the weekend was the Worcester Wolves and forward Anthony Paez, who scored 33 on Friday in an 83-97 win over the Sheffield Sharks and added 32 the next day in a 117-107 victory over the Jets. In other games, the Marshall MK Lions beat Leicester 61-74 on Saturday as Tony Windless scored 17 and on Sunday the Sharks downed the Lions 66-83 Shelby Chaney posted 17.
