The weekend saw a major shift in the British Basketball League standings as first place Newcastle Eagles added a pair of wins to their record, while defending champion Guildford Heat lost twice. A week after the Heat topped the Eagles in the BBL Trophy Final, the difference between the two team is now five victories. Kularoos Plymouth Raiders continued to roll and sits in second place at 19-7. The Eagles edged SAMG Verve Scottish Rocks on Friday 79-75 thanks to a pair of Andrew Bridge free throws in the waning seconds. Twenty-four hours later, the Eagles destroyed struggling Team Birmingham Panthers 67-88 behind 28 points from Darius Defoe and 23 from Steve Leven. The Heat lost 99-92 at PAWS London Capital on Saturday as the hosts used a late 10-2 charge to take a big win. Sam Bradley led the Capital with 18 points and Tayo Ogdengbe added 16. Tony Dorsey and E.J. Harrison paced the Heat with 24 points and Danny Gilbert chipped in 21. On Sunday, the red-hot Worcester Wolves won their sixth straight by besting the Heat 105-112 in a cat-and-mouse game in which every time the hosts got close, the Wolves pulled away en route to victory. League-leading scorer James Life scored 28 points to lead the Wolves, Anthony Paez added 27 and 8 rebounds and Skouson Harker had 25 points and 8 boards. For the Heat, Mike Martin netted 24 points, Harrison had 23, Nerijus Karlikanovas 19 and Gilbert 13. The day before, the Wolves got 29 from Paez, 26 from Harker and 25 from Chuck Evans to score a 119-104 win over the Everton Tigers. The Raiders used their only weekend performance to better Jelson Homes DMU Leicester Riders 71-107 on Saturday as Gaylon Moore scored 21. In other weekend games, the Marshall MK Lions downed the Riders 88-67 on Friday and then BiG Storage Cheshire Jets 88-92 on Sunday, while the Rocks trounced Birmingham 110-63.
