Baltic League playoffs, second round, first leg: April 4-5, 2008
|
ASK Riga and Siauliai each took a step towards the Baltic League final four with wins in the first leg of the quarterfinals. The return legs of the home-and-away series will take place next weekend. Last season’s finalists, Lietuvos Rytas and Zalgiris Kaunas, advanced to the final four automatically after finishing the regular season in the top two spots. Riga topped Kalev/Cramo 56-62 on the road, while Siauliai defeated Barons/LMT 90-84. Riga – the top seeded team in the quarterfinal – has the biggest advantage since it will play Game 2 at home. The Riga defense held Kalev to 12, 12 and 11 points in the last three periods and pieced together a 3-13 fourth-quarter run to wrap up the victory. Dwayne Broyles scored 14 points and A.J. Bramlett, Aerick Sanders and Sandis Valters added 10 points apiece to pace Riga. Bramlett also had 8 rebounds. Travis Reed had 13 points and 8 rebounds to lead Kalev. Siauliai built a promising double-digit lead, but Barons rallied late to get within 1. However the hosts took control in the closing minutes to win by 6. Donatas Zavackas scored 20 points and had 11 rebounds, Antonio Grant and Virginijus Praskevicius added 16 each for Siauliai. Armands Skele paced Barons with 19 points and Demitrius Alexander had 15.
