The Guildford Heat charged into second place over the weekend at the expense of Kularoos Plymouth Raiders, while on Friday British Basekball League champ Newcastle Eagles continued to win, pulling out a double-overtime thriller over Marshall MK Lions. It was the Eagles third straight overtime game and the club has won all three. The Eagles’ Lynard Stewart forced overtime and then an Andrew Bridge free throw with 5 seconds left in the first extra period forced the second. Big shots from Olu Babalola and Bridge scored helped Newcastle go ahead in the second overtime and then Babalola and Flournoy iced the win from the free-throw line. Bridge finished with a game-high 22 points for the Eagles and Steve Leven added 21. Yorick Williams had 18 for the Lions. Also Friday, the Raiders lost their grip on second place with a 78-73 loss at Sheffield Sharks. Shelby Chaney recorded 21 points, 11 rebounds, and 4 blocks and Atiba Lyons added 19 points to lead the Sharks to their fifth straight win. The red-hot Sharks extended their streak by topping Team Birmingham Panthers 71-96 on Saturday. The Heat took advantage of the Raiders’ loss on Sunday with a 106-82 win over the Everton Tigers. Tony Dorsey paced the Heat with 23 points and 12 rebounds, Mike Martin added 20, Dean Williams and Dan Wardrope scored 15 each and John Nottley and EJ Harrison had 13 apiece for the winners. The Raiders kept their hope of regaining second place with a 71-76 win at the SAMG Verve Scottish Rocks also on Sunday. In other games, PAWS London Capital defeated Jelson Homes DMU Leicester Riders 79-82, Worcester Wolves scored a 96-91 win over BiG Storage Cheshire Jets and the last placed Team Birmingham Panthers bested BiG Storage Cheshire Jets 97-100.
