British League playoffs, quarterfinals: April 23-27, 2008
Daniel Gilbert - Guildford Heat The British League playoffs got off to a calm start as all four favored teams advanced to the semifinals. Regular season champion Newcastle Eagles topped Worcester Wolves 105-96 on Friday. Steve Leven and Ola Babalola led a 12-0 third-period charge as the Eagles took control for good. Babalola paced the Eagles with 21 points, Darius Defoe added 20 and Leven 15. The playoffs tipped off on Wednesday as Marshall MK Lions topped SAMG Verve Scottish Rocks 105-93. Yorick Williams scored 27 points and Robert Youngblood had 26 for the Lions, who reached the playoff semifinals for the first time. The defending champion Guildford Heat beat the Everton Tigers 81-72 on Sunday as Mike Martin posted 25 points and 10 rebounds. The game was tied at 39-39 at halftime and the Tigers led 56-57 heading into the fourth quarter, but Martin scored 10 during a 19-6 tear as the Heat advanced to the semis. Daniel Gilbert recorded 23 points and E.J. Harrison had 12 for the Heat. Calvin Davis led the Tigers with 15. Meanwhile the Kularoos Plymouth Raiders dumped the Sheffield Sharks 91-73 thanks to DeAntoine Beasley's 26 points. The Eagles and the Lions will meet in one semifinal, while the Heat meet the Raiders in the other.
