USA takes gold from Spain in an all-time classic
|
One of the greatest games in basketball history closed the Olympic men's basketball tournament in Beijing on Sunday with the United States on top of the world again, but Spain having put European basketball on a higher plane than ever despite losing 107-118 in a heroic effort. Spain was within 104-108 with just over 2 minutes left, but succumbed to the Team USA's superior three-point shooting. Dwayne Wade scored 27 points and Kobe Bryant 20 to lead the winners, while Rudy Fernandez had 22, Pau Gasol 21 and Juan Carlos Navarro of F.C. Barcelona had 18 for Spain. The USA won its 13th gold medal, while Spain captured its second silver. In the bronze-medal game, Argentina defeated Lithuania 75-87 as Carlos Delfino of Khimki Moscow had 19 points and 10 rebounds, while Pablo Prigioni of Tau Ceramica dished 7 assists.
