Zalgiris Kaunas is the Baltic League champion! Zalgiris edged Lithuanian League rival Lietuvos Rytas Vilnius 84-86 on Saturday in Siauliai, Lithuania, to win the competiton for the first time. L. Rytas had defeated Zalgiris in the final in each of the last two seasons. After Hollis Price tied the game from the line with 4 seconds remaining, the final seemed destined for overtime. But DeJuan Collins had other plans and slashed through the L. Rytas defense for a game-wining layup at the buzzer. Zalgiris and Collins dominated early, with the point guard scoring 17 as Zalgiris took a 12-28 lead after 10 minutes. L. Rytas was able to cut the deficit to 40-48 by halftime and a Chuck Eidson slam made it a 5-point game early in the third period. Zalgiris recovered and a Marcus Brown triple soon restored a double-digit lead as the score settled at 59-67 after three periods. But L. Rytas never quit and came back in the end behind big men Matt Nielsen and Kenan Bajramovic, who hit a three to tie the game at 82-82 with 10 seconds remaining. Goran Jurak put Zalgiris up by 2 from the line only to see Price equal him with 4 seconds left. Just as it seemed that the game was ehaded for an extra five minutes, Collins had the last word and ignited the Zalgiris celebrations. Collins finished with 29 points and Brown added 24 for Zalgiris. Eidson and Bajramovic netted 16 each, Price scored 15 and Nielsen had 14 for L. Rytas in defeat. MORE |
