Edney closes Azovmash roster
Tyus Edney to Azovmash To top off the roster for its first ULEB Cup season, Azovmash Mariupol of Ukraine has announced the signing of veteran point guard Tyus Edney, one of the signature players in Europe over the last decade. Edney (178, 34), a former Euroleague champion and all-Euroleague selection, will make his ULEB Cup debut with Azovmash. Last season, Edney played 12 Euroleague games with Fortitudo Bologna, averaging 12.7 points, 2.5 rebounds and 4.1 assists per game. Edney won the Euroleague crown in 1999 with Zalgiris Kaunas in his first season on the continent. He was MVP of that Final Four. He is also among the only players ever to win both Euroleague and NCAA titles. Edney won the latter at UCLA, in his native Los Angeles, in 195. He then played two seasons in the NBA for Sacramento and another for Boston. He joined Zalgiris for the 1998-99 season and quickly reached the top with Zalgiris on a team that changed the course of European basketball by scoring more points on average than any champion in years. The next season, Edney moved to Italy to play with Benetton Treviso before returning to the NBA with Indiana. He returned to Treviso in 2001-02 and led Benetton to two straight Euroleague Final Four appearances. He and Benetton reached the final in 2003, when Edney was named to the all-Euroleague first team. In 2004-05, he played for Virtus Roma, and the following year he joined Olympiacos of Greece before returning to Italy to play in Bologna. Edney sits 15th all-time on the list of the Euroleague's best performance index ratings (17.4 per game). He ranks 17th among all-time scorers (15.2 ppg.) and sixth among passers (4.3 apg.) Edney won the Lithuanian League in 1999 with Zalgiris, two Italian League titles with Benetton (2002 and 2003) and three Italian cups with Benetton (2000, 2003 and 2004).
