ULEB Cup Week 2 MVP: Mamadou N'Diaye, Panellinios
|
A near-perfect effort from Panellinios center Mamadou N'Diaye landed him the title as ULEB Cup Week 2 MVP. N'Diaye came off the bench to post a 41 index rating, the best individual performance of the week. However it came short of being a perfect evening as Panellinios lost 79-69 at Red Star Belgrade. N'Diaye, a native of Senegal, had a perfect shooting night, making 9-of-9 two-point shots and 8-of-8 free throws for 26 points. He added 7 rebounds, 8 fouls drawn, 2 blocked shots, an assist and a steal for his index total. Shawnta Rogers of Elan Chalon was second in the week's index chart with a 36 index. Rogers posted a ULEB Cup career-high 35 points to lead Chalon to a 96-79 victory over FMP. The diminutive point guard made 6-of-7 two-pointers, 5-of-9 threes and was 8 of 8 from the line for his point total, also adding 4 rebounds, 4 assists, 2 steals and 7 fouls drawn. Antwerp Giants' Brandon Gay was third with a 34 index. Gay scored 25 points on 7-of-11 two-point and 1-of-2 three-point shooting, plus 8-of-8 free throws. Gay also had 8 steals, 8 fouls draws, 3 rebounds, an assist and a blocked shot in Antwerp's 76-79 loss to KK Buducnost. Todor Gecevski of Zadar scored 21 points and added 9 rebounds and 3 blocks along the way for a 33 index in an 85-74 victory over PGE Turow Zgorzelec, while Travis Young of EiffelTowers Den Bosch rounded out the top five with a 31 index after scoring 29 points in his team's 101-94 win over Hapoel Migdal Jerusalem.
Individual highs: Elvir Ovcina, Oostende triple-double
Rogers's 35 points were the most by any player in Week 2, but only rank him in a tie for sixth among players to compete in two games. Cordell Henry of Ovarense Aerosoles lead the Uleb Cup with30 points per game. James Thomas of Beghelli Bologna pulled down 16 rebounds in an 82-71 win over CEZ Nymburk. He leads the competition with 13.5 rebounds per game. Newcomer Willie Deane dished 12 assists in his debut performance to lead Lukoil Academic Sofia to a 109-65 drubbing of Artland Dragons. Red Star's Omar Cook and Gerrod Henderson of Anwil both average 7.5 assists per game, the most of any player to suit up twice this season. Antwerp's Gay recorded 8 steals on Tuesday and he leads the ULEB Cup with 7.5 steals per game. Sitapha Savane of Gran Canaria blocked 5 shots in an 89-73 victory over Ludwigsburg. Fribourg Olympic's Ken Johnson is averaging a ULEB Cup-best 3.5 blocked shots per game. Another highlight of the Week 2 games was the performance of Telindus Oostende center Elvir Ovcina, who posted 12 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists for a rare triple-double as his team beat Dynamo Moscow 89-83. There were also 11 other double-doubles this week. Willie Deane had the only points-assists one, while Kaya Peker of Besiktas, Zoran Erceg of FMP, Jimmy Baxter of Ventspils, Chris Owens of Galatasaray, Jackson Vroman of Akasvayu Girona, Ognjen Askrabic of Triumph Lybertsy, Matthias Mayer of Swans Gmunden, Murilo Da Rosa of Academic, Aaron Bramlett of ASK Riga and Mario Austin of Benetton all had point-rebound double doubles.
