Week 3 MVP: Jamie Arnold, Hapoel Migdal Jerusalem
|
One of the original stars when the ULEB Cup began five seasons ago, Jamie Arnold of Hapoel Migdal Jerusalem, showed he has plenty of life left by earning Week 3 MVP honors in a blowout Group I victory on Tuesday. Arnold posted 28 points while making 10 of 13 two-pointers, his only triple attempt and 5 of 6 free throws as Hapoel blasted Unics Kazan 107-68. He added 6 rebounds, an assist, 2 steals, a block and seven fouls drawn to amass a 38 performance index rating. Both his point and index rating totals were just short of personal bests he posted in the 2002-03 season, when Arnold led Krka Novo Mesto of Slovenia to the first ULEB Cup finals. Arnold ranks as the ULEB Cup's second-highest all-time scorer and third-highest rated player by index. Following him this week was Gregory Stempin of Ovarense Aerosoles, whose 37 index couldn't prevent his team from suffering a home loss against Elan Chalon. Stempin had 34 points on 5-for-7 two-point and 8-for-15 three-point shooting, plus 8 rebounds, 3 assists and 4 steals. Ken Johnson of Benetton Olympic Fribourg had a 36 index in his team's home loss against KK Buducnost. Johnson barely missed a triple-double with 23 points on 9-for-12 two-pointers, 8 rebounds and 8 blocks. Jerry McCullough of Unics (index 33), Nana Mensah-Bonsu of Benetton (32) and Julius Jenkins of Alba Berlin (32) completed the top individual performances for the week
Individual highs: Johnson, Stempin tie ULEB Cup all-time records
Stempin was not only Week 3's top scorer with 35 points, but the 8 three-point shots he made against Chalon tied the ULEB Cup all-time record that he now shares with seven other players: Jurica Ruzic, Pedro Robles, Kristaps Valters, Charles Smith, Hurl Beechum, Chris McGuthrie and Michael Watson. Curiously, his Ovarense teammate, Cordell Henry (24.7 ppg.), is currently the top scorer of the competition. Benetton's Mensah-Bonsu led all rebounders this Week by pulling down 15 boards during his team's home win against Lukoil Academic. Serhiy Lishchuk of BC Azovmash Mariupol leads all rebounders with 13 per game, while Mensah-Bonsu ranks fourth (10.3 rpg.). Justin Hamilton handed out the most assists this week, 12, in Spirou Chareroi's road win against Galatasaray Cafe Crown. Willie Deane of Lukoil Academic ranks first on the assists board (8.5 apg.) while Hamilton is now second (7.3 apg.). Robert Hite of Galatasaray collected 6 steals, more than anyone this week. Brandon Gay of the Antwerp Giants is first overall in steals (5.33 spg.) while Hite ties for fifth place (3.67 spg.). Johnson of Benetton Olympic Fribourg had 8 blocks this week against Buducnost, tying the ULEB Cup record for most blocks in a game, shared with Andre Riddick of Spirou Charleroi, who also had 8 against Alba Berlin on December 8, 2004. Johnson also leads the overall shot-block leaders with 5 per game. Seven players - Mensah-Bonsu, Chevon Troutman of Adecco Asvel, Antonis Fotsis of Dynamo Moscow, Elvir Ovcina of Telindus Oostende, Charles Gaines of Galatasaray, Virgil Carutasu of CSU Asesoft Ploiesti and Alex Dunn of Anwil Wloclawek - registered respective double-doubles this week.
